Western Dental to acquire Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners

ORANGE, Calif., US: Western Dental announced in May that it had entered into a definitive agreement to purchase fellow dental service organisation (DSO) Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners. Adding its 215 clinics to Western Dental would bring the total number of dental offices to 571 and significantly expand the DSO’s geographic footprint. The acquisition is awaiting regulatory approval.

Western Dental is based in California and offers accessible and affordable oral care and orthodontics through its affiliated brands, which are Western Dental, Brident and Vital Smiles. Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners is based in Texas and operates under four regional brands, Dental One Partners, DentalWorks, PERFECT TEETH and Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners.

Although its current portfolio of clinics spans just four states, Western Dental has a strong foothold in California, the most populous US state and the world’s largest subnational economy. Together with its clinics in Alabama, Arizona, Nevada and Texas, the DSO currently has 356 clinics and serves around three million patients. Western Dental said that the acquisition of Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners—which operates across 17 states—would add around one million patients and create a DSO that extends from coast to coast and border to border.

Daniel D. Crowley, chairman and CEO of Western Dental, commented in a press release that the DSO warmly welcomes Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners’ patients, dentists, dental hygienists and other team members. He said: “Our goal is for patients to continue receiving the same high-quality dentistry and great service from their favourite care teams at their neighbourhood [Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners] offices. We look forward to supporting those offices and their patients with an expanding menu of treatment options—including our state-of-the-art soft-tissue health programme focused on wellness and prevention, high-quality dental implants and overdentures, traditional braces and clear aligner orthodontics, and convenient on-site or adjacent specialty care.”

Leigh Feenburg, CEO of Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners, called Western Dental a dynamic and robust DSO. “This will be a great ‘dental home’ with focus on high-quality general dentistry, comprehensive treatment planning and convenient multi-specialty offerings for patients, excellent continuing education programmes for doctors and hygienists, and exciting career ladders for team members throughout the organisation,” he said.

In an interview with Dental Tribune International (DTI) in November last year, Western Dental Chief Dental Officer Dr John Luther said that the DSO focuses on providing a comprehensive range of specialist and general dental services under one roof, particularly in smaller communities where there is a shortage of general dentists and orthodontists.

The acquisition of Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners will increase Western Dental’s purchasing power in the field of dental technologies. Speaking to DTI, Dr Luther said: “Most digital equipment manufacturers offer volume discounts. As a larger organisation, we would expect to participate more fully in these discount programmes as we continue to offer doctors more digital technologies to support their work.”

Mid-Atlantic Dental Partners will receive a combination of cash and stock for the sale. Further details about the transaction were not disclosed.
