STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Pediatric dentist Dr. Lisa Lazzara says a visit to her new Annadale office for many kids feels like “a trip to Disney World.”
Through bright, colorful murals and props, Lazzara created theme rooms in her office that are especially appealing to youngsters. Themes include: a colorful jungle filled with smiling furry friends; an underwater world with colorful fish and other aquatic life; a winter wonderland for penguins and polar bears; aboard a ship sailing the seas; a sunny day at the beach.
And it’s not just visual. There’s a “fun and games” aspect, as every treatment room has a hidden tooth-shaped image in its mural so kids can have a “Where’s Waldo” type experience.
There’s even a swing in the waiting room so youngsters can pose for a photo before being seen by the dentist. And upon exiting, there’s a big “No Cavity Club” sign and tooth mural, which have proven to be a favorite photo backdrop for parents whose kids exit from a good check-up.
“We want the kids to be able to be excited, as well as their parents to post and share their wonderful experiences on social media so that others can see how a trip to the dentist can he fun,” said Lazarra.
And she said she made it that way so kids — many fearful of going to the dentist — will feel at ease.
“I know that I have made a positive impact on children that will last them a lifetime — they will forever be a ‘good’ dental patient, as opposed to being fearful of the dentist,” she said. “We create a relaxing environment that allows the children and parents to be at ease.”
And Lazarra’s new office isn’t her first. Kids Dental was formerly located in Tottenville, but she recently expanded into a larger space.
“I decided to move the location of my office to a larger space to accommodate the growing needs of patients and parents in our community,” she said.
In addition, she hired additional board certified pediatric dentists to join her team.
“This allows for additional office hours to offer flexibility in scheduling for our families’ busy work and school schedules. This new location also has more treatment rooms, allowing siblings to be seen at the same time, lessening the wait time and eliminating anxiety-provoking delays,” said Lazarra.
She opened her dental office — which treats children of all ages, including infants, toddlers and those with special needs — to provide “individualized and specialized” pediatric care.
“The most rewarding part of my job is being able to take an initially nervous and apprehensive child and having them leave the office laughing and enjoying the visit, excited for their next appointment,” said Lazarra.
“Similar to children visiting a pediatrician, kids need to see a pediatric dentist, because we have two years of extra training after dental school solely focused on the growth and development of children and their teeth. We utilize unique approaches to manage the various behavioral aspects of children, how to make them feel comfortable, and to make the experience pleasant,” she added.
And Lazarra said her biggest inspiration to work specifically with children comes from her dad.
“He taught me to work hard and study harder to attain the goals you desire. He always said, ‘Do what you love, and you will love what you do,’” she recalled. “I love my job, and I love treating kids. It is my personal mission to treat your child how I would expect someone to treat my own children.”
Lazarra said she keeps up-to-date on the most innovative dental technologies.
“We have the newest in laser technology, which allows us to treat conditions, such as infant and child lip and tongue ties,” she said. “Alleviating these restrictions helps with breast and bottle feedings, speech difficulties, breathing/airway issues, snoring, difficulty transitioning to solid foods and much more. The laser techniques can also offer canker sore relief, gingival overgrowth excision, and removal of soft tissue lesions.”
Kids Dental provides various dental procedures, including examinations; cleanings; sealants; fluoride treatments; frenectomy procedures; growth and development screenings for orthodontics; extractions; tooth-colored crowns; root canals; space maintainers; tooth whitening; nitrous oxide; and IV sedation with an anesthesiologist in office.
