Report those who offer illegal dental training, says Health DG

PETALING JAYA: Anyone with information on unqualified persons offering illegal dental training should lodge reports immediately, says the Health Ministry.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry is aware of such activities, which he said could also have negative effects and harm the public’s health.

“Curbing rampant illegal dental activities is a shared responsibility, either on those who provide and receive treatment and including those who provide unrecognised training services.

“The ministry takes every complaint received seriously and investigation will be conducted before enforcement (raids) can be done.

“Part VI of the Dental Act 2018 [Act 804] provides the authority to take action under this Act.

“Intelligence (gathering) and investigations need to be carried out carefully to ensure that elements of guilt can be proven without being hasty,” he said Wednesday (Aug 10).

Dr Noor Hisham was responding to The Star’s series of reports exposing syndicates in the beauty industry that allegedly offer short dentistry courses to anyone who wishes to acquire the skills and set up their own business.

For a fee ranging from RM1,000 to RM3,000, anyone can participate in various courses such as installing braces or veneers and performing whitening procedures, with a certificate and starter kit given at the end of the class.

A reporter from The Star took one of the courses, which lasted for only five hours and ended with the journalist being “certified” as a “dentist” who can perform dental veneer fitting on others.
