Dr Marco Tallarico, president of Osstem AIC Italy, the Italian section of Osstem’s Advanced Dental Implant Research and Education Center, recently spoke to Dental Tribune International during the Osstem-Hiossen Meeting in Europe, held on 28–29 October in Rome, Italy. Dr Tallarico described the importance of the scientific community supported by Osstem and its potential for having an impact on practitioners and on growth around the world.
Dr Tallarico, could you give us some background details about the connection between this event, AIC Europe and the scientific community attached to it?
The aim of the congress is to make the scientific community available for everyone. Osstem is already known as the best dental implant brand in Asia. However, in the rest of the world, in countries such as Italy, Europe, the Middle East, and the US, unfortunately, it’s not yet there. The Osstem implant is the most sold implant in the world, and for this reason, we believe that the scientific community could be the largest in the world as well. However, we need to work on building the scientific community first. For example, in South Korea, China, Japan and India, Osstem is already well known, and its name attached to the scientific community gives it more visibility. In contrast, in Europe, the Middle East, and the US, it is possible for the brand to achieve more growth through the scientific community.
How would you outline your goals as president?
My intention, as a key opinion leader for Osstem Europe, is to bring the whole community together, and this really fits well with the slogan of the congress, “Together has no limits”.
The mission of the scientific community is to provide the best evidence-based treatments for the patients while remaining independent. The community needs to follow the science, be open to other dentists and produce works such as research papers and events like this one in order to share knowledge. As president, I want to strive to unite the Osstem scientific communities worldwide so that we can start to work together—this is the next goal. To do so, the first step is to build up the numbers of followers around the world.
How can I do this? Simple, lead a good example. I love all of this work. As Steve Jobs said: “The only way to do a great work is to love the work that you do.”
Do you have any words of advice or encouragement for clinicians who are new to Osstem-Hiossen products or who are new to the scientific community? Why do you think they should consider joining a community like this?
The scientific community is like a town square where you can meet and sharpen your skills. This is very important for improving your daily practice. The concept is, firstly, to stay up to date for the benefits of the patients, and then, in addition, to help support young dentists because they don’t have sufficient support when they leave university. So, we can say that our community is a place where the clinician is not alone, but it is a place to share, in an open way, our plans, successes, solutions, training activities and everything else.
