Linda J. Conkright – Duluth News Tribune

Linda Jean Conkright (Nelson) passed away in her home in Coon Rapids, Minnesota on July 16, 2022, at the age of 70 surrounded by her loving family after a valiant 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Linda was born on June 24, 1952, in Superior, Wisconsin to Roy C. and Virginia M. Nelson (Curtiss). She grew up in Superior where she attended McCaskill School and Superior Senior High School (class of 1970). She received her BS in elementary education from the University of Wisconsin – Superior in 1974 during which time she met the love of her life and soulmate, John E. Conkright. She began her teaching career in West Bend, Wisconsin as a media center specialist for the Green Tree Elementary School. She embraced both teaching and being around young children. Linda and John were united in marriage in August of 1976 and would have been soon celebrating their 46th anniversary. In 1979, after John’s graduation from the Marquette University School of Dentistry, she returned to Superior to be closer to family. Linda worked as the office manager for her husband’s dental practice for many years and to everyone was the lifeblood of the office.

Linda was the loving mother to Jennifer and Curtiss. She was an amazing mom, wife, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and niece. She was friends with many and will be missed more than she’ll ever know!

She was the past president of chapter AD-BG of PEO and past president of the Northern Wisconsin Dental Auxiliary. She also participated in the starting of an organization that supplied free toothbrushes and other dental items to families in need. She was an expert in crocheting and donated blankets over the years to various organizations. She was also a lifetime member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Virginia (Curtiss) Nelson and many close aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is survived by her husband John E. Conkright of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, her daughter Jennifer (Seth) Jerabek of Pelham, New York, her son Curtiss Conkright of Blaine, Minnesota, her granddaughters Emerson and Brooklyn Jerabek, siblings Din (Herb) Martinson of Glen Allen, Virginia, Nancy (Bob) Clark of Superior, Wisconsin, and Paul (Eva) Nelson of Zurich, Switzerland along with many sisters and brothers-in law, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of her tremendous life will be held at Pilgrim Lutheran Church on Friday, August 5, 2022. Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, with Pastor Carolyn Mowchan officiating. Arrangements will be by Downs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Linda’s name can be made to the MN/WI Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).

As a lifelong reader of all books (including children’s literature) Linda would often quote passages from the authors. At this time, a most pertinent quote she particularly was fond of seems appropriate. It was a quote from one of her favorite children’s authors, Dr. Suess. The quote: “Don’t cry because it’s over – smile because it happened!”
