Dr. Richard Michael Cerami Obituary

Dr. Richard Michael Cerami, age 90, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2022. He was born in Erie on March 22, 1932, a son of the late Frank and Josephine (Pillitteri) Cerami.

Richard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 3rd Infantry Division 3rd Medical Battalion from 1953 until 1954. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1961. On Sunday August 30th, 1959, he met his reason for living and married Catharine Ann Howard on June 18, 1960, he considered that his greatest accomplishment. God blessed them with four beautiful daughters. He was a founding member of the American Academy of Dental Group Practice, he chaired the accreditation committee through the planning, development, testing and implementation. The American Association of Accreditation of Hospitals accepted this program. He was the founding member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and served as a director for four years. In 1981, he was chairman of the Annual Pennsylvania Dental Association meeting and in 1982, was the vice president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association. In 1996, he founded the group Health Professionals against Abortion. He was also a member of the ECDA, PDA, 9th District Dental Society, ADA and the Catholic Medical Association. He belonged to the American Legion, The Town Club and a life member of the Maennerchor Club. He was a member of the Erie Yacht Club and passed his love of sailing to his grandsons.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife Catharine Ann (Howard) Cerami; two brothers Richard J. and Gerald F. Cerami.

Survivors include four daughters Gina Marie (Vic), Christina Marie Jones (Brian), Kathleen Marie, Terry and Shannon Marie Cunningham; six grandchildren Derek Jones (Claire), Alexander Jones, Ethan Jones, Hunter Michael Cunningham, Tanner James Cunningham and Shar Durham (Derek); two great grandchildren Ripley and Ashe Durham; a brother Joseph L. Cerami (Carol) and a sister-in-law Judy Cerami; several nieces and one nephew also survive.

Friends are invited to call at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St. on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and are invited to a funeral mass on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Cathedral, 230 West 10th St. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
