Lightning kills 70 goats, goatherd escapes

SOFIA (AFP) - Seventy goats were killed when lightning struck near the central Bulgarian village of Sennik but the 38-year-old goatherd by their side escaped with his life, the state civil protection agency has said.

The shepard was trying to gather his herd of 100 goats when lightning struck the tree under which the wet animals had sought shelter.

“I heard thunder and then fire poured down from the sky. Something hit me and threw me to the ground. My hands and legs went all stiff and my head felt like exploding,” goatherd Danail Georgiev told Trud daily newspaper.

“Most of the goats were prostrated on the ground, dead,” he added.
