The Mysterious Sliding Rocks of Racetrack Playa

Sliding Rocks

Something is causing these rocks to move across the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley California.

Is it the wind?

Is it magnetic forces?

Could it be UFO’s, ghosts, or other super natural phenomenon?

More rocks on racetrack Playa

It seems like the obvious opportunity for some kind of crop circle-like hoax, but it’s not, this is real, these rocks have been recorded moving on the Racetrack playa since the 1940’s.

Geologists, Naturalists, and Park Services workers have been recording the movements for years, tried experiments, tagged rocks, even spent weeks at a time watching the stones, yet no one has even seen or recorded them actually moving.

The leading hypotheses favors strong winds when the playa is wet or frozen, but those theories have flaws in that two rocks that start side by side will move in different directions, or one will move 100 meters, while the other one doesn’t move at all.

The most remarkable stone to move since observations began was a 700 pound block of dolomite named “Karen” that disappeared around May of 1994, and may have later reappeared a half mile away.

An extensive study was done over 10 years ago,  tracking each rock individually as it moved with GPS Satelites.  The study confirmed that the rocks are indeed moving,  but the cause remains a mystery.
