Out of Touch Republicans Debate in California

Ronald Reagan Smoochfest
Watching the Republican debate tonight, with their continous nostalgic waxing for the Reagan days was quite a contrast to watching the 21st century Democratic debate a few weeks ago. It was like traveling through a time machine to to some neo-con fantasy land that never existed in the first place.
While the Democrats disagreed on how to get out of Iraq, or how to move forward on Global Warming or Healthcare…
These geniuses spent the night fighting each other to see who would be best at returning to the stone age on abortion, whose nose was furthest in the ass of the religious right, who hated stem-cell research the most, and who would be best at discriminating against gays.
These guys are all bums; they represent an ever dwindling mindset (neo-conservatism) that is becoming more and more inconsequential and out of touch with the rest of the American reality, and values, every day.
My final score…
The least clueless: Rudy Giuliani
What might have been: John McCain
The Scariest Right-Winger: Tom Tancredo
It looks like it’s Giuliani’s nomination to lose, and that’s not saying much really, but hell, at least he knows the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni, unlike the retard currently in the White House.
All of them are incredibly out of touch, even now, most of them still believe it was ok for the Republican congress to meddle with the Terri Schiavo case, they believe embryo’s need to be protected, while LIVING single children who have a single parent working 2 or 3 jobs do not, and they wouldn’t blink at bankrupting the nation on the never-ending war on adverbs (Terrorism, Drugs).
I predict a landslide for the Democrats in 2008, for the White House, and Congress. And barring an unforeseen coup within the Republican Party to shed themselves of the Christofacists, we may be witnessing the final years of the Republican Party.

I noticed one of the questions that was asked was “Do you believe in evolution?” The mere fact that they have to ask that question to Republicans running for President is pretty telling, and quite sad.

Finally, today I watched a vidcap of the part of the Republican debate where they all were asked by Chris Matthews to declare one way or the other on “choice.” It’s like they are on another planet. For decades, well over 50% of Americans are for a woman’s right to choose. Yet these assholes say when queried that the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade was wrong and it should be up to each state to decide. Let’s see. The states should decide on issues of personal privacy, unless the states decide to legalize medical marijuana. Or to legalize assisted suicide. Then it’s not up to the states to decide.
The past decade or more of Republican rule has made it clear state’s rights be damned. The only thing that party is interested in is total control of social behavior by a small minority who are threatened by our diverse society and our freedom. And they will say anything, make any kind of argument no matter how absurd, to accomplish their goal of ruling and controlling. This is just as totalitarian as the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan were. I don’t see any difference.
You think they are so out of touch with the mainstream that they are doomed to lose decisively in the next election, but I would say this: the determination of the group, the maintenance of a world view that is so at odds with most of the population and with our freedoms of privacy and speech, is ominous. They are not going away. No matter how pathetic they look, they are waiting for an opportunity. Like the vote fixing that has been going on the last 4 elections (from 2000 - 2006). Voting machines, disenfranchised felons and old people, no paper trails, easily hacked software, vote poll personnel stacked with corrupt Repubs intent on preventing Dems and others from voting. This is changing, but will it be reformed sufficiently by 2008? The cure for that? In France, 85% of the people vote. If even 65% voted here, the Dems would be in power for the next century.
Fear. What about another 9/11-type event on our soil? Or an economic upheaval along the order of magnitude of 1932? Sometimes this is all it takes for those with an anti-freedom agenda to come to power.
Don’t ever write off a group that is so certain of its rectitude that petty concerns such as diversity and freedom don’t figure in to its way of life. They are, at the very least, a hothouse, standing at the ready to incubate something more viral than a John McCain.
Our rights are under attack and have been for 30 years even though poll after poll shows that a large majority are in favor of things the way they are and even want some libral changes (ending or changing the terms of the War on Drugs, ending the Iraq War). Yet for 30 years we’ve had a surge in popularity for fundamental christianity, for creationism, against any form of birth control, etc., etc.
There’s a disconnect here: pay attention to this disconnect! I write about how it was in 1973, when we thought the fight had been won decisively. Events since then, proved us wrong again and again. These people are not going anywhere. Perhaps, long-term, consistant defeats at the polls combined with decisive direct action by Democratic leaders will put their kind of thought way back to the fringe where it deserves to be.
But, with all due respect. . . .not bloody likely without a fight. A real fight. Prolonged, sustained. The kind of fight where people lots of them throw down everything: their jobs, their homes, their way of life, to fight for their freedoms. Are you ready for that? When will you be ready. It’s coming. The Republican debate is one of the many reminders. It will be time to fight. Or to flee. Which will you decide to do? Think about now, while you have the chance.
