I Support the Troops More than YOU Do!

Modern American SwastikaDo you support the troops?  Are you sure?   Where’s your yellow ribbon Bumper Sticker?

I got in a big debate with my girlfriend this morning about those ribbon bumper stickers people put on their cars and trucks that say “I Support the Troops”.

They’ve always bugged the shit out of me, because I believe what they are really saying is “I support the War.”  If you ask the drivers of those “Support the Troops” Vehicles if they support the war, I would be willing to bet that 95% of them do.

Why?  First of all, who doesn’t support the troops?  In my opinion, having a bumper sticker saying you support the troops is akin to having one that says “I Support Kittens” or “I support Grandma and Apple Pie”.  It’s  ridiculous !  Who doesn’t support the troops?  We all support the troops, but not all of us feel the need to display it on our sleeves (or bumpers).

Second,  while the whole country supports the troops, its only in Redtopia (The Red States) that every other damn car on the road has the bumper sticker, its Redtopia that supported this idiotic war in the first place (although I realize that after 3 years, 2,400 dead GI’s, $500 Billion Dollars, and ZERO WMD, they too are starting to lose their stomach for this nonsense)  The reds, or former reds, feel the need to display the bumper sticker shows me that its about supporting the war, not the troops,  but who wants a bumper sticker that says they support war?  That sounds pretty evil, so they substitute WAR with TROOPS.

No, I’m sorry, but I don’t believe its about supporting the troops at all,  it’s a lame jingoistic method of showing you support the war, and while the original icon of the yellow ribbon may have been a good thing, it’s been twisted into a Neo-Con Modern day Swastika.  If you have the Ribbon, you’re on OUR Side, you Support the War.   No Ribbon?  Well you must be one of “them” (You know, one of those Hippy Elitist Liberals who don’t support the war…oops.. I mean troops).

So no, I won’t be slapping a “Support the Troops” Bumper Sticker on my new truck anytime soon,  While I DO Support the troops, and kittens, and Grandma’s,  I think these stickers (From Whitehouse.org) are a more appropriate way to show my Patriotism:

Support the Troops #2    Support the Troops #1

Support the Troops #4    Support the Troops #3

I want to know what you goofybloger’s think, reply to this post and tell me I’m full of shit, I’m right on, or somewhere in between.

I essentially agree with you. I don’t think these people though, that put the stickers on their vehicles, don’t put nearly the amount of thought into that you do (one way or the other). They (laregly) just want to do what what’s right.

I just read the blog that you commented on in the forums and you essentially copied his post from fark in this thread: here and put it on your own page as if you had thought of it yourself. Also, in your title it should say “than” not “that” and ridiculous is spelled as so, not, as you said, “Ridicules”

Maybe you should read the post again, That link leads to a comment area about a guys ad for his blog, whats that have to do with the topic in this thread? He’s not even talking about the yellow ribbons. He mentions the troops, but its a plug for his blog, News Flash for you John… More than one person on Earth is talking about Iraq and the Troops these days. So I suppose 590,182,540 people over the past 3 years must have “esseintially copied the post” as you say from this guy plugging his blog. Nice leap of logic there my friend.

By the way John… Question for you… The Discussion (or Arguement)… that I had with my girlfriend yesterday morning, that led to me creating this post in the first place… Did I “essentially copy” that arguement from Fark as well? Because if thats the case, I would really love for you to show me how that was done, maybe I can blame any and all future arguements with her on Fark too, is that what you do? If you get caught with your hands in some cookie jar, do you just say “Oh.. it wasn’t me… it was on Fark” ?

I looked at the thread John is talking about, I don’t get it either, the guy mentioned the troops, but so what? I did a Google Search on “TROOPS AND RIBBONS” and it returned 4,110,000 hits on the subject. I think we have a serious ganja smoker here.

We went through the same nonsense during the Viet Nam conflict - we never learn. It’s their way of holding us hostage. If you don’t support the war, you’re aiding the “enemy” and thus endangering the troops.

Even the troops fall for this crap.

As the aforementioned “girlfriend” I would like to explain my side. I thank many people (on the left) immediately jump to conclusions that supporting troops means supporting the war. I do not support this war - one that many have said is unjust. That being said, I do know many people who support our troops but not the war - how about all those Catholics I know who pray for, write to, and send items to our troops in a war that the late Pope John Paul II said is unjust. I am very tempted to get a yellow ribbon just to annoy Porter :)
