Loc 5: A Walk on the Tame Side

May 30th, 2007

By Restless
There’s been nostalgic articles galore lately from New Yorkers who lived here during the bad 70s and 80s when taking a subway ride was a risk like this one in this week’s Observer. They’re probably right. Chelsea looks more like this now. . .

Me? I’m new here. I just wander, mostly looking up. . […]

Location 4: A Walk in the Park

May 18th, 2007

It was a good day. Tulips were blooming, everybody was out.

The Met, late afternoon.

Skater grrrl.

Cool Shade.

Lake with a view.

Angels in America.

Making Manhattan livable.

I love New York in late-spring, especially in evenings. Warm, but breezy, the city takes a rest about midnight in the mid-week. Walking or biking around an almost deserted Manhattan — like being in SF on a balmy Indian Summer night.

My impressions of downtown New York: narrow, dark streets, smallish, cluttered, dozens of open pit construction sites.

Noon Rush, Ground Zero, World Trade Center

Canyon of Heroes (né Broadway) & Dey

Fulton Street, Waiting on the 6

Bike after 6 weeks (West Village).
Almost a year ago, I started posting on goofyblog with the lead On Location. Writing about things I see and read answered a need to express that had been long dormant.
I’ve always read a lot of current affairs materials, and, in the past, when I’d see a particular news […]

Bearded, earlocked rabbi jumping out of mitzvah mobile: You, you’re Jewish — come in and hear what we have to say.
Shiksa: I’m not Jewish.
Bearded, earlocked rabbi: Yes you are, I can tell. Your mother is Jewish.
Shiksa: No one in my family is Jewish.
Bearded, earlocked rabbi: Maybe no one in your family practices, but Jewish […]

Last Overheard

I checked out a lot the other overheardin’s (U.K., at the Office, at the Beach, Ireland, Philly, Minneapolis, Bakersfield (!)), but none seem as plentiful or as funny as OverheardinNewYork.  Here’s one more shot of the last few day’s posts.  That’ll do it!
Girl #1: Where do eggs come from? I mean, do chickens have vaginas?
Girl […]

Awesome Phrases that went missing at Gtmo, killed by thruthiness

January 3rd, 2007

Lake Superior State has been putting out an annual “List of Words and Phrases Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness” for 30 years.
Their latest is out and it’s a good thing. Some excerpts:
“WE’RE PREGNANT — Grounded for nine months.
“Were men feeling left out of the whole morning sickness/huge belly/labor […]

Barbie’s friend, Tanner

There seem to be 5 million dogs in New York.  I see guys walking them in packs of 5 to 10, women walking and talking to them as if they are their one best friend, dogs in cute expensive outfits.  Men, women, old, young, big dogs, small dogs, groomed, ungroomed.
Why are they walking them? […]

The last week of the year, a time to rest, contemplate, celebrate. That’s what I’m doing, that’s what I hope you’re doing. I’ll drop more articles at the beginning of 2007 but, for now, the accompanying picture was shot Christmas Eve in front of the New York Stock Exchange.
To see more shots taken that […]

Boston Tea Party

December 21st, 2006

“The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.”
-Thomas Jefferson
The 16th was the 233rd Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and all over the United States, people gathered to throw the 9-11 Commission report off into the water and demand […]

Highlighting our (the U.S’s) vast differences to the rest of the civilized world in regard to benefits to its citizens (health care, basic freedoms, etc.) is a new article regarding the days of vacation mandated by law in other countries. Though Mexico and Hong Kong are chincy (their laws say 1 week), only China […]

Not all of these Overheard’s may be funny to you or your cup o’ tea, but it’s clear there’s a lot of raw dialog going on out there. Makes me want to take my ipod earplugs out and listen a lot more. Keep smilin’.
Bimbette: So, I’m thinking of breaking up with my boyfriend.
Friend: Why?
Bimbette: […]

Reproductive News

December 7th, 2006

By Restless
Even though Democrats won control of Congress, the Bush Administration is extremely active in many areas, not the least of which is the Christian extremist bugaboo, sex and reproductive rights.
These whack jobs are in a distinct minority, but they still have the power and the influence and it’s like when will it end? The […]
