Tune in your television to the Tour de France this morning and you may see the perfect convergence of a feel-good miracle against medical odds, an inspiring tale of grit, and — by the way — one hell of a bike race.

Floyd Landis, a militantly modest American rider who is competing on a hip joint composed of dead bone, is on the brink of an epic moment that defies logic, medical science and conventional wisdom. Landis, who is such a regular guy that even the French are singing his praises (unlike his former teammate and seven-time Tour champion Lance Armstrong), is expected to take over the leadership of the Tour and the yellow jersey in today’s time trial.

If so, he will be the favorite to win the whole race. It is ridiculously improbable. And the story of how he got here is even better.
